The Cathy May Nelson Memorial Scholarship

Cathy May Nelson devoted much of her career to serving the English learner community. She first worked as a high school ESOL teacher and later led the ESOL program as Coordinator for Anne Arundel County Public Schools. During this time she worked closely with all of the founding members of The Chesapeake Language Project to support English learners in their journeys.

To honor her memory, the CLP and her loving husband, Pete Nelson, created the The Cathy May Nelson Memorial Scholarship. Your contributions will allow the CLP to honor her legacy.

All contributions up to $1000 made by December 1st will be matched by a generous donor.

Cathy Nelson

May 1, 1946 - October 30, 2020

Cathy May Bamburg was born with the essence of cross-cultural sensitivity and it manifested itself early. Only a few years after the end of WWII, her father, a U.S. Air Force officer, was assigned to Portugal and he elected to bring his young family with him. Cathy went to live in Lisbon and attended a British school. She was six. Since then, she was never without a valid passport.
